Flair |fler| 1. A special or instinctive aptitude or ability for doing something well.
During my usual Etsy browse I discovered a beautiful ring, which then led me to many beautiful pieces and discovering Katelin. Being the ballsy person that I am at times I sent her an email immediately to be a part of this, cuz come on, look at her stuff!
In a few sentences describe yourself and what you do.
I am a photographer turned jewelry designer. I create each piece by hand in my Cincinnati home studio.
How did you first get into jewelry design? What’s your favorite part about it?
I began experimenting with jewelry making and design after I graduated from college. Having another craft to teach myself has been challenging yet rewarding. I love that there are so many methods of jewelry making, the combination of materials and design are endless. Metal is currently my favorite to work with because of its ability to change in so many ways.
Do you have any creative heroes that you admire & have inspired you? Who & How?
Lately I’ve been inspired by the creative buzz in the young artists and entrepreneurs I’ve met throughout Cincinnati at craft shows and on social media. It is uplifting to meet like minded people that have stories to share about their path as a designer or business owner.
What does your design process look like?
The most exciting part of my job is designing and making new work. I carry a notebook to sketch new designs, which I later tweak through experimentation. Sometimes it is necessary to create a piece from start to finish to discover that it isn’t quite what I’m looking for, but a learning experience.
What is your favorite piece of work you have done and why?
Currently, my favorite piece is the Hair Pin + Angle Bangle set. I love the ways it can be styled as a hair piece, plus it doubles as a bracelet. Lately I’ve been interested in creating pieces that are versatile or interact with the wearer.
My personal favorite piece to wear is the hammered curve ear pin. It is such a lightweight piece that is easy to wear while creating a subtle statement.
Do you have a dream/goal that you wish to aspire?
I truly enjoy creating. Things have happened naturally with RSV, and I feel honored that people want to support what I’m doing. My only goals are to keep creating and to travel more.
What motivated you to start your shop? Any advice for those wanting to do the same?
I continued to create pieces on and off for about a year before I decided to try to sell anything. When I opened shop, things were slow until I began participating in craft shows, handing out business cards, and working on the brand image. My advice- It is important to connect with people and get your name out into the world. Someone is likely to support your cause (and spread the word!) if you spend a few minutes speaking about you and your process!
Do you have any quotes you live by?
“When one tugs at a single thing in nature, he finds it attached to the rest of the world.” John Muir
I love this quote because it reminds me to slow down and take time to enjoy the world around me when things get a little too hectic.
If you could live and work anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
This is a difficult question. During my free time, I try to travel as much as I can. I love experiencing new places, landscapes, and food and would choose to live somewhere that has these things within a few hours in any direction. My ideal living and working environment would be in a big open space with lots of windows and natural light in the middle of the forest or with an inspiring view. Some places I’d love to explore (and possibly live) are New Zealand, Colorado/Utah, PNW, Scandinavia, Banff National Park… the list could go on and on.
Early bird or night owl?
Early is when I’m most productive, but if I’m feeling creative I don’t mind staying up late!
