Flair |fler| 1. A special or instinctive aptitude or ability for doing something well.
To start the year on a high note, we'll continue to bring inspiration from these talented Flairs because they're simply just awesome. For the first 2016 flair we have Jen, a very talented photographer that's here to share her lovely photos and inspiring words with us :)
P.S. Design Sponge had her in their top Instagrams to follow... That's how talented she is!
In a few sentences describe yourself and what you do.
Hello! I’m a lifestyle, portrait, and travel photographer fond of human connection, the art of every day, new places, people, juxtaposition, and finding beauty in simplicity. I take photographs of people, places, and things for a living; I feel lucky every single day for the opportunity to do so. I’m laid back and am constantly seeking movement and growth.
How did you first get into photography? What’s your favorite part about it?
I studied music for years before becoming a photographer, but I’ve been drawn to creating images for as long as I can remember. Moving away from my hometown to San Luis Obispo in 2009 gave me the opportunity to explore new creative endeavors, one which was blogging. I would shoot and post mostly personal/lifestyle work on my blog. I connected with some of the most amazing creative individuals and independent business owners through social media, many of which inspired me to to take the leap of faith and pursue photography as a profession.
My favorite part about photography is connecting with others, collaborating, and the change and growth that happens with time—on a professional and personal level.
Do you have any creative heroes that you admire & have inspired you? Who & How?
A lot of my friends are my creative heroes! To name a few, Satsuki Shibuya, Jessica Comingore, Dabito, Justina Blakeney, Victoria Vu, and Kristine Arellano. I admire their vision, voice, refined style, and mind-blowing talent.
How would you define your aesthetic to potential clients?
Photojournalistic, simple, and fluid. I am most often drawn to the natural movement and art of every day life and its happenings.
What is your favorite piece of work you have done and why?
My favorite work happens when I’m traveling and am in new environments. I think this is because it’s when I am the most free to create and there are no limitations. You can see some of my favorite snaps here!
Do you have a dream/goal that you wish to aspire?
I really do feel like I am living my dream as a freelance photographer right now. I get to create art, travel, meet and work with new people often, and I have this incredible freedom/flexibility when it comes to my job in general — it doesn’t get much better than that in my opinion! My goal is to continue to connect with people on a deeper level and share the beauty I see.
Being a successful freelance photographer, do you have any advice for those following your footsteps?
Pursue what makes your heart sing. Work with and learn from people that inspire you to go above and beyond. Listen to your intuition.
If you could live and work anywhere in the world, where would you go and why?
The answer to this always changes, but right now it would be New York City; I’m moving there in February!
Early bird or night owl?
Night owl all the way! I love nights!
